How to extend a Student visa UK?
You must apply online to extend your UK Student visa and must meet the eligibility requirements as set out in Appendix Student of the Immigration Rules.
You can apply for an extension of the UK Student visa to extend your stay if you are already in the UK on a Student visa and want to continue your course. UK Student visa holders also can extend their visa if they want to study a new course.
For a Student visa extension application, you must not be exceeding the maximum period limit for staying in the UK on a student visa. An application for an extension of a Student visa is made in accordance with the requirements as set out in Appendix Student of the Immigration Rules.
The UK Immigration Rules require that there should not be more than 28 days gap between the expiry of the student’s leave to remain in the UK and the start date of his new course.
If there is more than 28 days gap between the expiry of your leave to remain as a student and the start date of your new course, you are required to leave the UK and apply for a Student visa from your country of nationality by submitting an entry clearance application to the British Embassy or High Commission.
What is a Student visa UK?
The UK Student visa allows overseas students to come to and study in the UK if they have been offered a place on a course by a Home Office approved institution. This visa has replaced the Tier 4 (General) student visa.
International students can apply for a Student visa to study in the UK if they’re 16 or over and have been offered a place on a course by a licensed sponsor.
The licensed student sponsor means a UK educational institution which is approved and licensed by the Home Office UKVI.
Requirements to apply for a UK Student visa extension
If you want to extend your UK Student visa then you should meet the following requirements of the Immigration Rules for the renewal of your Student visa:
- Use the correct UK Student visa application form
- You must have a valid CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)
- You must be a genuine student and meet the genuineness test for a student visa
- You must select an eligible course to study in the UK
- You must meet funds and financial requirements
- You must meet the English language requirements

Documents required for the extension of a Student visa
To switch to a UK Student visa, the applicants will need to provide several documents in the support of their visa application depending on their personal circumstances.
You must provide the following documents when you apply for the switch to a UK Student visa from inside the UK:
- Your current valid passport
- CAS letter from your course provider (licensed student sponsor)
- Evidence of that you have enough money to pay the course fee and support yourself

You should get a decision on your UK Student visa within 8 weeks if you are applying for a Student visa extension or switching to this visa

For those applying for a Student visa from outside of the UK, the Home Office (UKVI) aims to process visa applications within 3 weeks.
How long does the visa application process take?
Once you have applied online and attended your biometrics appointment, you’ll usually get a decision on your visa within:
- 3 weeks, if applying from outside the UK using standard service
- 8 weeks, if applying from inside the UK using standard service
- 5 working days, if applying using priority service
- 24 hours, if applying using super priority service
Super Priority Service
You may be eligible to use the “super priority service” to get a faster decision by the end of the next working day (within 24 hours). You’ll need to pay £1,000 in addition to the UK visa application fee.
Priority Service
You may be able to choose the ‘priority service‘ when you apply for a UK visa to get a faster decision within 5 working days. You’ll need to pay £500 in addition to the UK visa application fee.

- £490 to apply for a Student visa extension or switch to this visa from inside the UK
- £363 to apply for a Student visa from outside the UK
